Every number we quote comes from the same process. Here it is.

A repair price, a buyback offer and a grade on a listing are all outputs of one inspection. If that inspection is vague, every number downstream is negotiable — which is exactly how the used-phone trade earns its reputation. So this page publishes the process in full: what we check, how we grade, what the warranty does and does not cover, and what happens to your data while the device is with us.

The model

One intake, four possible endings.

A device arriving at the workshop does not have a predetermined outcome. The diagnosis decides which branch it takes, and you decide whether to take it.

Nothing moves past the diagnosis without your approval. A diagnosis that ends in "not worth repairing" costs nothing and the device is returned free.

The substance

The 40-point inspection, in full.

The same checks run on a device coming in for repair, a device we are buying, and a device we are about to list for sale. Nothing is skipped because a phone "looks fine".

The rule that governs every grade: a grade is never based on cosmetics alone. We assess cosmetic condition, battery health and function as three independent scores, and the final grade is the worst of the three. A flawless-looking iPhone with 78% battery health is not a Grade A device and we will not list it as one. A pristine phone with an intermittent microphone is not a Grade A device either. This is the single most common place the used-phone trade misleads people, and it is the one rule we will not bend — including when it costs us money on a buyback we would rather have graded up.
Published standard

Four grades, defined so they mean something.

"Good condition" is not a grade. These are, and the same definitions decide both what we pay you for a device and what we charge for one.

A Grade A refurbished iPhone with no visible cosmetic marks

Grade A — Excellent

No marks visible at normal viewing distance. Battery 90% or above. Every function passes. Presents as close to new.

B Grade B refurbished iPhone with light micro-scratches

Grade B — Good

Light micro-scratches visible under direct light. No cracks, no dents. Battery 85% or above. Every function passes.

C Grade C refurbished iPhone with visible scratches and minor edge wear

Grade C — Fair

Scratches and edge wear visible without looking for them, possibly a small dent. No cracked glass. Battery 80% or above. Every function passes.

D Grade D iPhone requiring repair before any resale

Grade D — Repair required

Cracked glass, a bent frame, or at least one failed function. Never sold in this state — it is repaired and re-graded, stripped for parts, or recycled.

Grade Cosmetic condition Minimum battery health Functional requirement What we do with it
A — Excellent No marks visible at arm's length. Glass and frame effectively unmarked. 90% All 40 points pass. No known faults. Listed as Grade A certified refurbished with a 12-month warranty.
B — Good Light micro-scratches under direct light. No cracks, chips or dents. 85% All 40 points pass. No known faults. Listed as Grade B certified refurbished with a 12-month warranty.
C — Fair Scratches and edge wear visible without searching. A small dent is acceptable. No cracked glass. 80% All 40 points pass. No known faults. Listed as Grade C with the marks photographed, or the battery is replaced and the device re-graded.
D — Repair required Cracked glass, bent frame, heavy denting or a failed component. Any One or more of the 40 points fails. Repaired and re-graded, stripped for usable parts, or routed to licensed recycling. Never sold as-is.

Battery health is read from the device and stated on every listing as a minimum, not an average. Where a device sits on the boundary between two grades, it goes into the lower one.

Special statuses that override any letter grade

Some findings are not a matter of degree. A device carrying any of these is flagged with the status instead of a grade, whatever its cosmetic condition.

Status

Activation Locked

Find My is still enabled or an Apple Account remains signed in. We cannot buy, refurbish or resell it, and we cannot remove the lock. It is returned to you with instructions to sign out.

Status

Blacklisted

Reported lost or stolen, or barred by a carrier. We do not purchase it, we do not resell it, and we return it to the person who presented it with the finding stated in writing.

Status

Water damaged

Liquid contact indicators triggered or corrosion found internally. Repairable in some cases, but never graded or sold as a standard refurbished unit, because latent corrosion failures cannot be ruled out.

Status

MDM locked

Enrolled in a mobile device management or supervision profile belonging to an organisation. Only the enrolling organisation can release it. We do not attempt to bypass it.

Status

Counterfeit suspected

Serial, board markings or internals inconsistent with the claimed model. We stop, document what we found, and return the device. We will not knowingly trade a counterfeit handset.

Status

Parts only / not economically viable

The repair cost exceeds what the working device would be worth. We tell you the numbers, offer a parts-value price, and you can accept it, take a free return, or let us recycle it.

Parts

Three tiers. Named on the invoice, not implied.

The price difference between a cheap screen and a good one is real, and you are entitled to know which one went into your phone.

Tier A

Genuine-grade

Original-specification components sourced to Apple's published part specification, with True Tone and Face ID behaviour preserved wherever the model allows.

  • Closest to factory condition
  • 180-day repair warranty available
  • The right choice if you intend to resell the device later
Tier B

Premium aftermarket

High-quality third-party parts from vetted suppliers. Excellent everyday performance at a materially lower price than genuine-grade.

  • Best value for most daily users
  • 90-day repair warranty as standard
  • Recorded as aftermarket, never as original
Tier C

Refurbished original-pull

Genuine components recovered from donor devices and reconditioned. The economical route for older models and price-focused repairs.

  • Lowest cost on legacy models
  • Genuine origin, reconditioned condition
  • 90-day repair warranty as standard

The commitment. The tier you approved is printed on your invoice and on your warranty card, and it is the tier that goes into the device. We will never describe an aftermarket part as an original Apple part, and we will never substitute a cheaper tier than the one you paid for. DOTEDGE is an independent repair provider and is not affiliated with or authorised by Apple Inc.

Warranty

What the warranty covers, and what it plainly does not.

A warranty that is only described in the positive is not a warranty, it is marketing. Both halves are below.

Covered

  • 90 days on workmanship and the parts we fitted, standard on every repair
  • 180 days on repairs carried out with genuine-grade Tier A parts
  • 12 months on any refurbished device we sell, covering hardware failure not caused by damage
  • 14-day return window on purchases, for a device returned in the condition it was sold
  • Failure of the specific part we replaced, within the warranty period
  • A fault we caused during the repair, corrected at no charge

Not covered

  • Accidental damage occurring after the repair — new drops, knocks or cracks
  • Liquid ingress occurring after the repair
  • Physical damage such as a bent frame or crushed housing
  • Unauthorised opening or servicing by a third party, which voids the warranty on that repair
  • Pre-existing software faults, iOS issues and data loss
  • Consumable wear — normal battery capacity decline over time, port and button wear
  • Cosmetic marks disclosed and photographed at the point of sale

Making a claim takes three steps

  1. Message us on WhatsApp with your invoice number. The invoice records the device, the parts tier fitted and the warranty end date, so there is nothing to look up on your side.
  2. We arrange a free collection. Warranty pickups use the same island-wide courier as any other booking, and there is no charge for the collection or the return.
  3. We re-inspect, then repair or replace. If the fault falls inside the warranty, the work is done at no cost. If the inspection shows it does not — new impact damage, for example — we tell you what we found, show you why, and quote the repair before doing anything.
Data privacy

Your phone holds more about you than your home does.

Banking, messages, photos, work email, two-factor codes. Handing that to a stranger deserves written rules rather than a verbal assurance, so ours are published here.

The written device intake agreement

Completed and signed before any work begins. It records, in writing:

  • The device's condition on arrival and any existing damage, photographed
  • Find My status and whether an Apple Account is still signed in
  • How your passcode is handled if functional testing requires one — and that you can decline, with the tests that then cannot be completed listed explicitly
  • That responsibility for the data on the device remains yours
  • Exactly which repair you are authorising, and its quoted price
  • The limits on what a technician may access

While the device is with us

  • Technicians work only within the diagnostic and repair scope you approved
  • Photos, messages, notes, email and files are never browsed. Functional tests use the camera app, the dialler and settings screens — not your content
  • Devices are held in locked containment when not on a bench, and the workshop is under CCTV
  • Devices are not taken off-site, and no third party handles them except the courier, in a sealed tamper-evident bag
  • We do not copy, extract or retain data from a customer device

Back up before you send. Always.

The backup is your responsibility and we will keep saying so. Repairs occasionally require a device to be restored, and a device that arrives already failing can lose data before we touch it. Back up to iCloud or a computer first, every time, even for a battery swap. We will remind you at booking and again at collection, but we cannot recover what was never backed up.

Devices we buy and resell

  • Every unit is erased to a documented standard before any refurbishment work
  • The device is re-inspected after the wipe and before it is listed, so nothing is passed on with data on it
  • A wipe certificate referenced to the IMEI is available on request, and is issued as standard per unit on business fleet buybacks
  • A device that cannot be verified as erased is not listed

On PDPA. We handle personal data in line with the obligations set out in Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act — collecting only what a repair or a purchase requires, using it only for that purpose, keeping it no longer than we need it, and telling you what we hold if you ask. To be precise about what that sentence does and does not say: this is a statement of how we operate, not a claim to hold a certification, accreditation or ISO standard, because we do not hold one and will not imply otherwise.

End of life

What happens when a phone is genuinely finished.

Some devices are past the point where a repair makes financial sense. That is not the end of their usefulness, and it is certainly not a reason to put them in a bin.

  • Usable components — cameras, Taptic Engines, frames, ports, undamaged displays — are recovered and become Tier C refurbished original-pull parts
  • Recovered parts are tested before they enter stock, and are labelled as original-pull wherever they are later fitted
  • Logic boards from devices we have bought are destroyed rather than resold, so no storage leaves us intact
  • Everything that cannot be reused is routed to licensed e-waste handling under Singapore's regulated channels
  • Nothing we buy is exported as untracked scrap

Questions

The ones worth asking

Five groups, listed in full further up this page: identity and status (model, storage, region, IMEI, Activation Lock, carrier lock, MDM, blacklist), battery (health, cycles, service and genuine-battery warnings, charge retention), display (cracks, scratches, dead pixels, burn-in, touch response, brightness, True Tone, prior replacement), body and structure (front and back glass, frame, camera glass, dents, bends, prior opening, corrosion, missing screws), and function (Face ID or Touch ID, buttons, cameras, flash, microphones, speakers, haptics, charging port, wireless charging, MagSafe, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS, NFC, sensors, calls, SMS, mobile data and eSIM).
Yes, and this is the point of grading properly. Cosmetic condition, battery health and function are scored independently and the final grade is the worst of the three. A spotless iPhone with 78% battery health is not Grade A. Neither is a spotless iPhone with a microphone that drops out on speakerphone. Anyone grading on looks alone is describing the outside of a device and calling it a condition report.
We offer three labelled tiers: genuine-grade original-specification parts, premium aftermarket, and refurbished original-pull. Whichever you approve is printed on your invoice and warranty card and is what goes into the device. We never describe an aftermarket part as an original Apple part. DOTEDGE is an independent repair provider and is not affiliated with or authorised by Apple Inc.
A written intake agreement is completed before any work begins, covering condition, existing damage, Find My status, Apple Account status, passcode handling, data responsibility, repair authorisation and access limits. Technicians work only within the approved scope — photos, messages and files are never browsed. Devices sit in locked containment under CCTV and do not leave the workshop. We handle personal data in line with Singapore's PDPA obligations. You can decline to share a passcode; we will tell you which functional tests then cannot be completed.
Accidental damage after the repair, liquid ingress after the repair, physical damage such as a new bend or crush, unauthorised opening by a third party (which voids the warranty on that repair), pre-existing software faults and data loss, consumable wear including normal battery decline, and cosmetic marks that were disclosed and photographed when the device was sold. Everything covered is listed in the warranty section above — both halves are published deliberately.

Now you know the process. Put a device through it.

Free diagnosis, free island-wide collection, and a repair price and a buyback value returned together so you can pick whichever is worth more.
